The goddess Demeter was the only one of the greek goddesses on Mount Olympus who could truly empathize with the human experience of suffering and grief, having experienced it fully herself.
The most nurturing of all the goddesses, the greek goddess Demeter was responsible for the fertility and the arts of cultivating the soil and therefore the abundance of the harvest. The goddess Demeter is also known as the Roman goddess Ceres, the name from which the English word cereal is derived.
