The Goddess Demeter

Demeter

 

The goddess Demeter  was the only one of the greek goddesses on Mount Olympus who could truly empathize with the human experience of suffering and grief, having experienced it fully herself. 

The most nurturing of all the goddesses, the greek goddess Demeter was responsible for the fertility and the arts of cultivating the soil and therefore the abundance of the harvest.  The goddess Demeter is also known as the Roman goddess Ceres, the name from which the English word cereal is derived.

Persona:

  • Goddess of agriculture
  • Goddess of grain
  • Creates abundance
  • Represents the mother
  • Caregiver, always nurturing, understanding
  • Very tied to food
  • Provides spiritual sustenance
  • Solid and dependable
  • Represents the ability to dreams and allow death and rebirth to occur
  • Represents the homebody, the caretaker
  • Generous and helpful
  • Altruist
  • Martyr
  • Represents the mother that clings, adores, rages and grieves
  • Represents anger, but she does not know how to be angry
  • Is over-controlling
  • Finds it very difficult to say no
  • Clings very possessively to a child, has a smothering aspect
  • Has trouble setting limits
  • Can be a devouring mother
  • Would rather destroy than let it happen independently
  • Embodies depression, burnout
  • Fosters dependency and unplanned pregnancy
