Grounding and Clearing Energy

Grounding

As you begin to explore in the more advanced spiritual realms being able to ground your energy and clearing released energies becomes an important tool in recovering balance and internal harmony.

Opening up to intense spiritual growth means increasing levels of spiritual energy in your body. Often the only limitation to how fast you can progress, is how much energy can you handle. So needless to say spirit continues to ramp up the spiritual energies as much as you can stand it.

I had to work with many individuals who had specific needs for care and healing. Energetically this is a challenging experience for any therapist. Moving from one client to the next means shifting gears quickly and efficiently. Therapist who are highly sensitive to people's energy may feel drained at the end of the day, with stress levels similar to the clients complaints.

Lacking the discipline to establish and maintain good grounding can be costly to therapist or professionals. The importance of energy awareness and grounding cannot be emphasized enough, especially during bodywork sessions.

Being grounded in the body means that one listens and responds to the basic needs that are being expressed by the body.

Identifying Ungrounded Symptoms:

I have been using a body scan technique for many years to help balance the body/spirit connection.

A scan is an excellent tool in identifying physical stress and upsets. Pain can be so overwhelming in one part of the body that the rest of the body get neglected. The body scan is an exercise in assembling the larger hurts alongside the minutest details of stresses that you may have overlooked in your body.

Another benefit is that sometimes painful hurts are often miraculously lifted from us while the body scan is being done in order to help us bring our awareness to the less obvious.

Body Scan:

Bring your thoughts from busy mental chatter downward by focusing on your feet. Don't rush this process. Take your time moving from each part of your body. Also, you don't need to touch yourself, just allow your mind to switch focus from wherever it is. Begin with your feet and move upwards.

Notice the soles of your feet, your toes, in-between your toes, the top of your feet, the back of your ankle.

Do they feel hot? or cold? Do they hurt? Are they numb? Do you feel your blood circulating through them? Are they feeling tired?

Don't judge how they feel - just notice how they feel. Wiggle your toes. How does that feel?

Once you have a made a strong connection with your feet you may then move your attention upwards to your ankle... then switch focus to your lower legs, onto your knee caps, behind your knees, your thighs, and so on.

Keep reminding yourself not to rush.

Allow yourself to breathe throughout the scanning process, especially as you come to any areas of discomfort (stressed muscles, soreness, etc.) or at any spot that feels like there may be an energy block.

Once you have moved through your torso and up to your neck, drop back down to your fingertips, move your attention to the hands, up your arms and shoulders, returning your attention once again to your neck before finishing up with your focus on face and scalp.

How do you REDUCE the energy?

It's common for spiritual energy to get SO intense that you can't stand it any more. The trick becomes to learn how your body grounds (get's rid of) energy. Realize that each person's body may differ, but this gives you some ideas to explore.

1. Walking Barefoot

Most spiritual energy seems to come down through my body and then exit through my feet into the ground. Walking barefoot is VERY grounding compared to sandals and especially sneakers or shoes.

  • Walking barefoot on the beach (slowly)
  • Walking on the grass, concrete, dirt, pavement

The physical act of walking also "burns off" energy (unless you do energized walking).

Walking also seems to "clean out" the energy system of older energy that has been hanging out and allows "fresh" energy to enter the body. It feels revitalizing and clear, versus stagnant overcharge.

2. Shower/Bath

Water is a good conductor and allows (encourages) the body to shed access energy. A shower is good for cleaning your energy aura and a bath is good for removing energies that get held in your muscles and such. I will often start by standing in the shower, then just sit down and close the drain with the water still raining down slowly filling the tub.

Oft times during intense processing/letting go I will sit in the shower with the water hitting me . Releasing seems to go easier and faster because anything you release is cleansed rapidly by the water, it doesn't hang out and pool where you are sitting/laying. It makes for powerful and more effortless letting go.

Once note about hot tubs... while I LOVE hot tubs I can soak for HOURS! Realize that the energy you release takes a LONG time to get removed from the water depending on how grounded the system is (most are quite insulated for heat reasons). If I do intense processing in a hot tub, the next time I go back in I can feel the "icky energy" hanging out in the water still. The water can look/smell clean... but it is holding the old energy and feels dirty. The only quick solution is to drain the water and refill it. Old energy left in the water will cause the water to keep getting out of balance. The filter won't filter out energy and chemicals have very little impact on energy. In the near future hot tubs will need to get energy filtering/balancing systems added to them as well.

3. Eating

If you are trying to get a more powerful effect (more energy) do your journeying on an empty stomach (fasting is VERY powerful.) So having food in your stomach is a natural buffer.

The body takes it's energy from the incoming spiritual flow. So if you journey for several days (or more) the body will often not ask for food, or even appreciate it. Yet if you are looking to ground out the energy, and reduce the length of the journey, eating does help because it forces the body to consume energy to start processing the food.

Meats are the most grounding. Foods that contain grease are also quite grounding. As you get into turkey/chicken/fish these foods don't do much for grounding.

Lighter things such as salad, vegetables are useless for grounding, though might help the body with chemical balancing. Simply ask your body what it needs and it will tell you what will help it with balancing.

Sugar is a wild card for people. For me sugar can be used both as grounding or stimulating depending on the intent.

As with all processes, you need to have a strong connection/communication with your body in order to keep things balanced. Allow your body to tell YOU what you should be eating. As an example, I will feel a need to ground. I will ask the body what it most needs for grounding. Body will come back and say something. While it may not be much, it knows exactly what it needs to ground/balance. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!!!

Side note, drinking water has a neutral effect on energy. It does not increase or ground energy at all... yet is VERY IMPORTANT to the body in order for it to stay functional.

4. Setting/Environment

This stuff may seem obvious, but it's often overlooked. The closer you are to the ground, the easier your body can ground. The quieter the environment, the more grounding. Because people radiate energy, the more people you are around, the more energy is sent towards your body. Being in the forest or near the water is FAR more grounding/stabilizing then being in a busy city. Being close to the ocean or large lakes has a VERY powerful grounding energy for many miles away from the shore.

Body Orientation to Ground

Also realize that your body's orientation to ground is significant. For me sitting, with both feet on the ground, is the most powerful grounding position. The body sends down energy "roots" from the feet and a BIG energy root from the spine into the ground. When laying flat, the energy roots are smaller, but there are more then 3 them.

The front of your body is more "insulating" then the back of your body. So laying on your back is more grounding then laying on your side or stomach. (This also applies when doing healing work with another person, they can accept more energy from body contact from their back, then from their front.) A spring mattress or waterbed is more grounding then a foam or air bed.

Contents of Room

Also the contents of the room you are in makes quite a difference. An empty room with no carpeting and bare walls and mirrors allows energy to bounce around a LOT, making things ungrounding. Having carpeting, wooden furniture, draperies and plants in the room is FAR more grounding! (think of the properties of sound/echoing... sound is energy.)

Also realize that every object you have in a room has a "message"... it speaks or radiates (energetically). So if you have a lot of clutter/knickknacks/books, objects in the room with you, there is a lot of energetic "noise" in that room that will not help you to get grounded. The simple act of closing a closet door has quite an impact on the energy of a room.

5. Clearing Energy

Any time you are doing ANY type of processing or letting go your body releases old stored "negative" (no longer useful to you) energy. So where does that energy go? Depending on your location... not very far.

Quick simplified science lesson: Energy that is stagnant, acts like particles. The visual I can give you is that of low lying fog you may have seen in stage productions or concerts that just kind of hugs the ground and flows looking for the lowest place to go hang out in. This is a good analogy for what happens to the energy when you release it unconsciously. It just kinda flows out of you and puddles around you, on the floor, just like that heavy stage fog does.

Just like the fog, if you don't disturb it... It just hangs out there, and does NOT go away until you consciously do something with it. (Technically the fog will dissipate over time, energy does too, but much more slowly for heavier energies like those released during processing.) Energy that is in motion acts like a wave, more like sound. It will pass through walls/objects and go as far as you push it.

Consciousness can direct energy. So simply by intending the old energy to clear, you can turn the fog like particles into waves (sound) that move and can leave your room.

Any room where a person is doing processing or journey work needs to be energetically cleaned OFTEN!

Visualize a room with 4 people. TONS of old heavy energy is released from each person and acts like a fog. Before too long, the entire room FILLS ceiling to floor with this energy. If there are no windows/doors open those people can almost literally suffocate in all that old energy. Being immersed in a room full of old energies, it literally seeps back into their bodies again. There is no place for that energy to go and no one to remove it, it just keeps getting recycled into their bodies.

Methods of Clearing Energy

1. Regular house cleaning.

Dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, opening up windows to let the air move and doing laundry with the intent to remove dirt (and energy) will in fact clear the energy. Removing clutter, junk, garbage all has a very significant effect on the energy. Think of dust as settling particles of released energy and you have an accurate visual.

2. Energetic Clearing (using intent)

This is the fastest way of clearing energy. You are using your intent (will power) to "move" the energy by giving it momentum and turning it from a stagnant particle into a moving wave (like sound). Frankly, it's a matter of "imagining" if you will, those invisible particles moving off to wherever you send them. I normally just send it on it's way and let spirit handle the re-processing of the energy.

I have two main techniques that I do it (thought there are an infinite number of other options!)

Incense (flavour is not important, pick something pleasing!)

- If the room needs only mild cleaning, I will just light an incense and leave the room. I picture it as wherever the smoke reaches, it drives the energy out of the room.

-If the room has some very heavy energies, I use a stick of incense and carry it around the room and deliberately pass smoke by all main areas. Especially the floor and untraveled corners of the room. My intention is to send off the energy.

*Native Americans often used the plant spirit of SAGE to assist them in clearing. In modern times I find it accessible... but if you are looking for something powerful, burn Sage, it WILL do the work regardless of how strong your intent is!

Sound (chime, singing bowl, bells, etc)

Stay energy aware and your life becomes MUCH more stable, balanced and pleasant!
